Family history researchers will find a tremendous amount of information off-line at our national, state and local libraries & archives.  Before you plan a research trip, it's best to study what their holdings are, to make a list of the ones you are interested in and to know what it is that you are looking for in each.  Most of them have web pages with helpful tips about visiting their facilities, so read these first.  Time is usually limited, so by being prepared you'll receive the most benefit from your visit.

Don't be alarmed to find some reference materials not on open shelves.  Ask the help desk about what they may have and be prepared to surrender your driver's license to see them.  Sadly, due to the continual theft of many genealogical holdings, facilities have had to take security measures.

Make notes of which holdings may be available through inter-library loans so that your visit to that facility will be looking at the holdings you cannot see at a facility near your home.

Pay attention to facilities hours and closings for holidays.  Many local libraries have had to cut back on evening and weekend hours.  You may need to spread your time between a local county library and a regional library on Saturdays and Sundays.
