Location.  Location.  Location.:  Generally, young ladies married from home so their marriage record will probably be in the county where her parents were living or where her church was at the time she married.  Widows usually re-married in the same county where they were living when their husband died or where their parents were living at that time because she may have had move back in with them for support.  Young men and widowers, being true to their nature, would wander a wider geographical range in search of their bride.  It's not surprising to find a male ancestor's marriage record in any one of the surrounding counties.  Eloping was almost always a cause for a young couple to marry in a county other than their parents' home.

Siblings of one family marrying siblings in another family was a common practice.  The resulting children were called 'double 1st cousins' and were genetically closer than single-birthed siblings yet not identical twins.  Because of so many 'inherited' diseases, AAG recommends that researchers be sure to include a reference within double 1st cousins' individual notes so that tracing these diseases will be easier.

 

 Marriages between 1st cousins was a common practice in the Old South.  It was a way for the land to remain in families from one generation to the next.  [See Book:  Forbidden Relatives: The American Myth of Cousin Marriage by Martin Ottenheimer]
Rushing Down the Aisle?  Women died in childbirth in large numbers. Husbands were usually working farms or the mines, had other young children and likely the motherless infant to raise.  Therefore, widowers would re-marry quickly.  The usual, respectable waiting period of one year before re-marrying just wasn't always practical in the rural South. 
Multiple Marriages.  One of the most common errors we at AAG see is that all females shown in a county's marriage records are assumed by researchers to be 'single, never been married before' ladies; and, so all maiden names.  The title designation of Mrs. was not always included within the transcribed record.  Always consult the original marriage record.  The 1900 census will show how many marriages each spouse had.  If it says M1, then that was the wife's first marriage; but if it says M2 or greater, then her marriage record name was most probably in her married name from a previous husband.  A larger than normal gap between children's birth years is also a sign of possible multiple marriages. 

The phrase "nee SMITH" associated with a female ancestor means that their maiden name was Smith. She was born a Smith.  Relict and Consort are other words associated with spouses.

As of November 2007, local custodians for vital records now have access to birth and death certificates for the entire state of Georgia and may issue certified copies for other counties.

Certified copies of marriage records before 1952 are only available from the county Probate Court where the license was issued.

Tennessee

Marriages were recorded in counties prior to statehood, a few as early as 1778 , such as those for Green (1780), Washington (1787), Hawkins (1789), Carter (1790), Jefferson and Knox (1792), and Blount (1795). However, a state law requiring the registration of marriages did not pass until 1815. A subsequent state law in 1838 required marriages to be registered in “well-bound books.” Between 1838 and 1919 both marriage licenses and bonds were recorded.

Jan 1953 to present: TN Dept. of Health - Vital Records Office. Marriage records are only kept here for 50 years, then they are sent to Tennessee State Library & Archives 'TSLA'.

1945-1953  State-wide index at TSLA is on microfilm.  $$ for a search.

South Carolina

South Carolina law requiring marriage licenses began in 1911. Licenses are on file with the Judge of Probate in each county.

Before 1911, marriages were legal if performed according to canonical law; common law marriages also were recognized. Churches recorded marriages, but only a small portion of all recorded marriages. South Carolina researchers must search through individual county records, newspapers, church or parish records, and Bibles for marriage records prior to the 1900s.
 

Pre-nuptial and other marriage settlements date from about 1760 - 1890.  They are located in county conveyance books or the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and on microfilm at the FHL.

Newspapers accounts of marriages from 1732  (see Newspapers).

Note:  Old Pendleton (County and District) records were transferred to the custody of Anderson District which became Anderson County.
