Local News
Items of Interest for Herald Readers No politics in ’97. Thank the Lord Keep your shirt on. Give us the news. Bring us a load of wood. Mrs JA Butt, we are glad to note, is recovering from a severe spell of Lagrippe. Grippe is taking the country. And he says he is forever done with us. He having to pay an honest debt of five dollars is the cause of it. We are glad you are done, brother. US Commissioner, EG Wellborn was very sick first of this week. Esquire MG Coldwell was in town Monday last, on business. Mr AB Butt has been quite sick with grippe this week. He is some better now, we are glad to learn. Dr Lon Christopher, Ivy Log’s successful physician was in town Monday. Mr Jim Reid was in the city Monday on business. The republicans had a post office meeting here on last Saturday. The Editor and wife will spend a day or two at Hiawassee last of this week. We should start up our Sunday school now. Rev. Tyson will preach at the Methodist church on Sunday, Jany 31st. Mr Jasper Ross died of Lagrippe on Tuesday Jan 19th. Mr Ross was one of our best citizens and was loved and respected by all who knew him. John Jones is in Atlanta, this week on business Tom Delk hangs today (Friday). Mr Boyd, representing a marble co of Tenn. Is in our town. Col Butt and Sheriff Boling went to Young Cane Wednesday on business. It has got to be a common occurance aroun here for a fellow to kick his shirt off after having to pay an honest debt. It is might hard for some of them although they have the whole county to kick in. WF Thomason, dealer in Marble tomb stones and monuments, Blairsville, Georgia, will give you first class work, first class material at the very lowest figures. Call on him and examine his work. The entire family of Mr AJ Ledord including himself, have been sick for several weeks with grippe. We hope to see them all up again soon. Mr Ireland, a prominent mining man of Colorado, has been spending some days in our county looking at some of our minerals. Mr Ireland seems to be highly pleased with the country, etc. and may open up something here that will prove a great benefit to this section. The 1st quarterly Conference for the Blairsville charge embraces 3rd Sunday and Saturday before in March. It will afleet with Salem church. The official staff of every church in the Blairsville circuit should be on hand promptly. We are glad to learn that Mr Elbert Crawford, one of our county boys who is in Colorado and who has been very low with typhoid fever, is recovering. Dump Nelson being taken for Gene Butt and Gene Butt being taken for Dump Nelson, has got to be a common occurance here lately. Butt and Nelson are both mad, Mr Nelson especially is kicking. We are glad to welcome Mr. Will Teague as a citizen of our county. Mr Teague was once a citizen of Union and was once Sheriff of the county. Rev Mr Tyson is teaching an interesting school here. Mr Tyson was ........teacher and has a good school. The people should send their children. The weather was so uncomfortable Sunday that no services were held at the Methodist church. Services will be held regular on the third Sunday in each month. That “pisen” pen of Harve Craig’s will not be missed by the readers of the Gainesville Eagle, although the paper was bought recently by the Eagle Publishing Co., Mr Craig is still connected with the paper. A tiger blind (my note: blind tiger - a place where
illegal whiskey may be bought.) from the good old county of Union created a
sensation Friday evening by putting itself on exhibition, unintentionally,
however, to the vulgar gaze of a motley gathering in front of Commissioner
Gaston’s office on Spring Street.
