TN, GA, SC and NC all seceded from the Union and were part of the Confederacy. However, Union troops were initially raised in East Tennessee. North Georgia had many Union sympathizers at the beginning of the war. So, it's not surprising to find our Tri-State area's men enlisting into the Union forces in TN.  Later, their sentiment was for the Confederacy.

Men preferred to fight with those they knew and trusted.  So, they would enlist into companies that had other members of their families.  Before beginning Civil War research on a particular ancestor, know the county where they were residing and where their father, uncles, brothers and brothers-in-law were residing in 1860.   For a quick lookup, visit:

Initially, enlistment into Union companies was only occurring as far South as East TN.   The Thomas Legion was NC 69th Regiment CSA that enlisted men from East TN as well as Western NC and also had several companies of Native Americans.
